Confirming the performance showed in 2006 and 2007, the Portuguese footwear exportas have been growing in 2008. In the first two months of the year, Portugal exported footwear valued at 279 million euros, which means an increase of 11.4% relatively to the previous year. Exports are growing more than imports (more 10.4% to 100 million euros), so the trade balance in the sector returning a very positive record. The footwear reinforces, exactly, its position of product that more positively contributed for the Portuguese trade balance.
Even, these numbers are very positive, the year of 2008 is being board by managers with some caution, particularly because of cooling of some main world economies. Remember that Portugal exports 91% of its production.
Overall, the Portuguese exports of footwear increased 8% in the last two years (2005 to 2007). For this contribute, decisively, the good performance of the European market.
Indeed, exports of footwear to the EU increased by 9.9% to 1141 million euros (more 103 million euros exported in 2007 compared to 2005). The Portuguese footwear grew practically in all relevant markets such as France (more 23.3% to 363 million euros), Germany (more 8.5% to 238 million euros), Netherlands (more 11.3% to 134 million euros) and Spain (more 26.9% to 107 million euro). Emphasis note, even, for good performance in some markets with little tradition in the structure of Portuguese exports such as Italy (more 61.5% to 18 million euros) or Poland (more 241% to 2 million euros).
Outside the Europe, are perceived difficulties of penetration in the U.S., because of the devaluation of the dollar. However, the Portuguese footwear seems to have found other markets for high growth potential like Russia (11.5% more for 13 million), Angola (plus 161% to 12.8 million), Japan 2 more, 7% to 3.2 million), Turkey (plus 17.4% to 2.8 million), United Arab Emirates (more 71.7 to 1.6 million) and Australia (more 293% for a million euros).
It should also highlight that exports of footwear are growing in all segments the leather, the waterproof footwear, plastic materials or textiles. Diversify, in terms of products but also in terms of markets (Portugal exported footwear to 118 countries), seems to be a priority for the Portuguese companies.
