Stories

With a degree in Management Informatics from the University of Coimbra, João Mendes represents the second generation of ISI Soles, a company specialising in the production of components for the footwear industry.

Was working in the footwear industry a natural choice for you?

Yes, it was a natural choice. Even while I was at university, I was already interested in learning more about and exploring the footwear industry. When I graduated, joining ISI Soles made perfect sense, even though I knew it was a highly demanding sector with a very fast-paced working environment.

How would you define ISI Soles, and what sets the company apart in the market?

ISI Soles stands out for its strong ability to respond to market needs, largely thanks to the diversity of its product offering. Over the years, the company has established itself as a leading name in the production of TPU and TPR soles and has also been strengthening its focus on prefabricated components, a segment that continues to evolve constantly.

What have been the biggest challenges so far?

On a personal level, the biggest challenge has been understanding the complexity and enormous diversity of raw materials, as well as how each one behaves. Since the company offers a wide range of solutions to the market and I had no previous experience in materials, this learning process has been particularly demanding, but also extremely rewarding.

What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the industry?

I would say that the most important thing is to start on the factory floor. That is where you truly understand the processes, how production works, and the dynamics of the company. From there, I would recommend spending time in the different departments to understand every stage of the process and gain an overall view of the business. This knowledge is essential for professional growth and for taking on greater responsibilities in the future.
